Exploring Physics Education Research (PER) through the Lens of the Learning Sciences – Marc Whiting

Summary

As a first-year grad student specializing in PER within the Department of Education Psychology (ED PS), I bring a unique perspective. My undergraduate journey in astrophysics began here at the U, where I developed a deep-seated passion for the field of physics and the importance of good pedagogy. This lecture will delve into the core principles of the learning sciences and their application to PER, while highlighting the importance of innovative pedagogical strategies in enhancing STEM education. We will examine key concepts such as ‘sensemaking’ within academic environments and discuss the impact of research-informed pedagogical practices on the educational experience.
