Application deadline is February 1, 2025
The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Utah offers a research experience program where undergraduate students work closely with a faculty mentor and their research group on an individual project. All interested students are invited to apply online for this 10 week summer program.
Program participants gain direct experience by working in ongoing experimental or theoretical research programs in the following fields:
- Astronomy
- Astroparticle Physics: Cosmic Rays, Gamma Rays, Neutrinos
- Biophysics
- Condensed Matter Physics: Theory and Experiment
- High Energy / Particle Physics
- Physics Education Research
For more detail, please visit the individual group websites below.
All students attend weekly seminars on current research in physics in addition to several professional development workshops throughout the Summer. The experience culminates with the presentation of findings at a closing Symposium with nearly 300 undergraduate presenters.
Stipends, Lodging, and Travel Expenses:
Participants will receive a $7,000 stipend and University housing is provided. Travel costs to and from Salt Lake City are also covered. $1,000 for post-REU conference travel is also available to every participating student.
Eligibility Requirements:
Applications for the REU program are sought from current undergraduate students who may be interested in graduate studies in physics and astronomy, and who are either U.S. citizens, U.S. Nationals, or permanent residents. Applicants should not have earned a B.A. or B.S. degree as of the start of the REU program. People from groups that are underrepresented in Physics and Astronomy (e.g., Women, genderqueer, BIPOC, those with disabilities, etc.) and students from universities with limited research programs are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application:
The 2025 summer program will run from May 22 – August 2. The application deadline is February 1, 2025. All applications should include:
- Two Letters of Recommendation
- Personal Statement (maximum of 800 words):
- Discuss your interest in participating in the REU program; how participation will fit into your goals (e.g., pursuit of graduate- or professional-level work in a specific discipline or area); the scientific questions that intrigue you and why; and the area in which you would like to conduct research. Be specific about your interests, as this will help facilitate your placement.
- Discuss your relevant background - academic, personal, and service; the special strengths, interests, and personal qualities that you bring to the program; and what you hope to gain from participating in the program.
- Unofficial transcripts.
